Most gardeners are very fond of the black blotched faces that adorn the centre of Pansy flowers. But if you prefer a clean, contemporary look then Pansy 'Clear Crystal Mixed' makes a great choice for beds, borders and containers. This dazzling blend are blotch-free, solid colours that will brighten up the garden over a long period. Height and spread: 23cm (9”).

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. The crystallised petals are great decorations for cakes and cookies, or they can be added straight to green salads for an injection of colour. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sowing

Sow late winter/spring or late summer. Sow 1.5mm (1/16in) deep in good seed compost excluding light as darkness is beneficial. Germination usually takes 14-21 days at 19-24C (65-75F). Keep the soil just moist and avoid high temperatures which will prevent germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow cool. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 23-30cm (9- 12in) apart in most soils, sun or part shade.

Summer sowings should be moved to a cold frame and planted out in early spring.
