A native of tropical rainforests, these wacky pitcher plants are a botanical curiosity which is bound to draw attention and make an unusual feature for a hanging planter. Also known by the name ‘monkey cups’, it was once thought that monkeys drunk water from their pitchers! The pitchers hang down from tendrils growing from the leaf tips and are full of digestive juices. Insects are attracted by sweet-smelling nectar within the lid of the pitcher and then lose their footing on its slippery lips, tumbling down into the pool of digestive juices below. Nepenthes ‘Blood Red’ has especially eye-catching pitchers, bi-coloured red and pale green. Colouration is varied throughout the season. Height: 40cm (16”). Spread: 30cm (12”).
1 x 9cm Potted Plant (15cm Tall) (KC9884)
Nepenthes will need moist (but not soggy) soil. This is best achieved by regular watering. Nepenthes are fairly tolerant to tap water, but it’s best to use rainwater or distilled water, as carnivorous plants are particularly sensitive to the chemicals contained in tap water. Nepenthes do not need feeding - these carnivorous plants will catch their own food in their flowers. Grow in a mixture of sphagnum moss and perlite for best results, avoid using potting soil and compost as this can harm the plants.
Pitchers can be trimmed away as they die. The growing medium should be kept just moist throughout the winter while the plant is not actively growing.
