Flowering Months

As the name suggest, Monarda 'Pink Supreme' produces fabulous shaggy whorls of pink flowers set above clumps of blissfully aromatic foliage. Bergamot, or Beebalm as it is often known, has long been a cottage garden favourite. It makes a lovely cut flower for summer bouquets, and always plays host to bees, butterflies and other insects throughout its long flowering period. This particular cultivar has a shorter habit than many, making it perfect for the front of borders. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 40cm (16").

Culinary note: Use the dried leaves to make Bergamot tea or use the sweet, spicy flavoured petals to enhance salads, jellies, rice or pasta dishes. For more details about edible flowers click here.

How to Grow

Bergamot plants dislike soils which are particularly dry or have a tendency to waterlogging. Plant them in a moist, well drained soil, adding compost or well rotted manure to amend excessively heavy clay or sandy soils. Choose a position in sun, semi shade or dappled shade.

Feed and water regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded bergamot flower heads to encourage more blooms to be produced. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant in spring. Lift and divide clumps of monarda plants every 3 years in autumn to maintain vigorous, healthy growth.
