An unusual hardy species of this sensitive plant. Lax arching stems with small thorns (briers), and very sensitive leaves that fold when touched are then graced by attractive pink puffball-like flowers during the summer, attracting beneficial insects to the garden. Height: 30-60cm (12-24in).

A little experience

1 packet (20 mimosa seeds) (TX04674)

Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart.

Soak seed in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. Sow the seed on the surface of a good free draining, damp seed compost, and lightly cover with a sprinkling of vermiculite. Place container in a propagator or seal inside a polythene bag and keep at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) until after germination which usually takes 21-30 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination.

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots of good, peat-based compost mixed with some grit. When well grown, pot on into 20cm (8in) pots. Grow in a well-lit position with good ventilation, take care not to over water and apply an occasional liquid fertiliser.
