How to Grow

Grow marrows on in warm conditions until all risk of frost has passed and marrow plants are large enough to be transplanted. Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting marrows outdoors in rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun at a distance of 90cm (36") apart. Cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. When growing marrows, a thick mulch of organic matter spread around the plants will help to conserve moisture at the roots.

More Info
Water marrows regularly – do not allow the soil to dry out as this will impair their development. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. Marrows appreciate an application of a high potash fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season. Hand pollinating marrows is not usually required when they are grown outdoors. However, for indoor cultivation the female flowers can be fertilised by pressing a male flower against them. Begin harvesting marrows from midsummer onwards when they begin to swell. Regular harvesting will encourage more marrows to be produced. Culinary note: Marrow flowers are edible and can be eaten cooked or added raw to salads.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
