Description
Better known as Edelweiss, Leontopodium is a hardy perennial, alpine plant. Leontopodium nivale subsp. alpinum 'Berghman' was specially bred to have long stems that are suitable for cutting. Soft and 'woolly', star-shaped blooms make a striking display above the silvery foliage. Edelweiss enjoys free drainage particularly during the winter months, so it is perfect for growing in rockeries and on very light soils. The unusual looking blooms make excellent dried flowers too. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 20cm (8").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

1 x 9cm potted leontopodium plant (KA8681)
2 x 9cm potted leontopodium plants (KA9015)

How to Grow
Pot up young edelweiss plants and grow them on in frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When plants are well grown, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Grow edelweiss in full sun on non acidic, well drained soil. On heavier soils, incorporate plenty of grit to improve drainage, prior to planting.
More Info
Deadhead faded edelweiss flowers to extend the flowering season throughout the summer. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Leontopodium in spring to maintain their vigour.
