Description
A particularly early cropping variety that can be lifted by July from an early planting, but will easily stand until Christmas from a later planting. The long, slender stems of Leek 'King Richard' are full flavoured and ideal for slicing. This RHS AGM variety can also be grown close together for delicious, succulent mini leeks, but is best harvested by Christmas as it is less hardy than some other varieties. Height: 45cm (18"). Spread: 30cm (12").

How to Grow
Grow leeks in rich fertile, well drained soil in sun or semi shade. Choose an open site and prepare the soil in early spring by adding plenty of well rotted farmyard manure to improve its structure and fertility. Alternatively grow leeks in patio bags of good quality compost. When leeks are at least 20cm (8") tall, transplant them into the well prepared ground at a distance of 23cm (9") apart. Using a large, thick dibber, create each planting hole to a depth of 15cm (6") and lower the leeks into the holes ensuring that they reach the bottom. Fill each hole with water, washing sufficient soil around the plants to ensure that they can establish. This planting method will produce leeks with well blanched stems. Cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.
More Info
Leeks should be watered regularly until fully established. Once established, they will only require watering during very dry periods. Hoe between rows of leeks to destroy weeds and bring insect larvae to the surface. Leeks can be harvested from autumn onwards; however they stand well in the ground and can be lifted when required throughout the winter and spring. Lift leeks by levering them out of the ground with a spade or fork.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
