The sumptuous blooms of Iris louisiana 'Ann Chowning' are unmissable! Large velvety red petals with a contrasting splash of gold are borne on stiff vertical stems from May to July. This showy, moisture-loving Iris makes a lovely choice for planting at the edge of ornamental ponds where the upright, strap-like foliage adds a strong vertical element to your planting scheme. These striking hardy perennials make excellent cut flowers so it’s worth planting a few extra plants for summer bouquets. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 30cm (12"). Planting depth: Zones 1, 2 & 3 to 20cm (8") below water level.

How to Grow

Iris louisiana plants thrive in damp, acid or neutral soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. These moisture loving Iris require a rich, fertile soil which has had plenty of well rotted organic matter added into the soil prior to planting. Grow Iris louisiana in moist, boggy soils or submerged in the shallow margins of ponds with the crown to a maximum depth of up to 20cm (8") below water level. Choose a position in sun or semi shade.

When grown in damp borders, Iris louisiana require reliably moist soil. Water if necessary during dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Overcrowded clumps of Iris plants can be divided in autumn after flowering. Mulch around the base of Iris louisiana in spring to help retain moisture at their roots. Iris that are grown in ponds may be cut back to just above the water surface in autumn.
