This eye-catching variety boasts rich red, lacecap flowerheads, set off to perfection by a backdrop of dark green foliage. Hydrangea macrophylla 'Red Bull' makes a fabulous patio plant. Its compact bushy habit is perfectly suited to pots, where it will provide a long summer of colour. In autumn the foliage turns to gold and red, and the faded flowers provide skeletal silhouettes, extending the season of interest well into winter. Hardy and reliable, this deciduous shrub works equally well in mixed borders. Height and spread: 120cm (48").

Hydrangea macrophylla prefers a sunny or semi shaded position, with shelter from cold, drying winds. Grow hydrangea plants in any rich fertile, moist soil. Improve the soil prior to planting by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Alternatively plant hydrangea macrophylla in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
More Info Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune after flowering, reducing the stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
