Large and small, blue and green leafed varieties. Although they will not reproduce identically, worthwhile colour combinations should appear. Height: 12-30cm (12-30in).
Culinary note: The best part to use is the 'hoston', the rolled up leaf as it emerges in the spring. Cooking depends on the size of the hostons, small ones can be fried for a few minutes, going well in stir fries. Thicker ones are better boiled and used as a vegetable. 1 packet (50 seeds) (TX08253)
Sow from late winter to late summer 1.5cm (0.5in) deep in a peat based compost. Make sure that the compost is moist but not over wet and seal in a polythene bag until after germination which usually takes 1-3 months at 10C (50F).
Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Later plant out 45-60cm (18-24in) apart in sun or part shade in a moisture retentive soil to which some peat has been added.
Coloured foliage forms give their best show in part shade.
