Description
Through sales generated from the National Trust seeds, a minimum of £7,500 will be given to the National Trust to help look after nature, beauty and history for everyone, forever.

Hollyhock 'Halo Mixed' makes a big impact in borders, with colourful flower spikes reaching up to 2m high! The bee-friendly blooms of this mixture unfurl in an array of beautiful shades, each centred with a distinctive halo. A cottage-garden classic which grows easily in any sunny spot, even in poor soils, low-maintenance Hollyhocks put on an impressive summer show ideal for beds, borders and narrow spaces against walls. This award-winning mix has been recognised by the European Fleuroselect panel of experts for novelty-factor! Height: 180cm (71"). Spread: 60cm (24").

Culinary note: try crystallising the flowers for a tasty cake decoration, or use them to make a delicately flavoured syrup to use with puddings. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sowing

Sow Hollyhock seed from February to July on the surface of a good seed compost, and cover with a light sprinkling of compost of vermiculite. Place in a propagator at a temperature of 15-21C (59-70F) or seal the seed tray inside a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 14- 21 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow on in cooler conditions. When Hollyhock plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting outdoors. Grow Hollyhocks in full sun in any fertile, well drained soil. Choose a position that is sheltered from strong winds. Space hollyhock plants at least 60cm (24") apart to improve air circulation and help prevent hollyhock rust.

More Info
Feed and water regularly until hollyhocks are fully established. Support their tall stems with bamboo canes as the flower spikes develop. In autumn, cut back the old foliage and faded hollyhock flower stems, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant.
