The Kew Pollinators range of seeds from Thompson and Morgan has been specially created alongside the experts at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to attract and support a wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies and beetles, as well as a number of other important pollinating insects. Helping these pollinators to thrive is hugely important for our eco-system as a whole and these seeds, in their striking packaging inspired by artwork from the Kew archives, will help to create the environment which they need to thrive, with varieties chosen to help a wide range of pollinating insects, including some night flowering plants to help moths which also play an important part in our gardens.

Globe Artichoke 'Green Globe Improved' bears larger, heavier, and more consistent quality globe-shaped heads. The characteristic sharp spines have been greatly reduced in this improved variety. The astonishingly tasty hearts make a supreme delicacy when pickled, and the base of the leaves can be eaten too. This majestic perennial vegetable makes an attractive addition to any vegetable plot. It is ideal for the flower garden too, attracting bees to its thistle like flowers when left unharvested. Height: 180cm (71"). Spread: 75cm (30").

Sowing
Grow globe artichoke plants in rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun with protection from strong winds. Direct sow globe artichoke seed outdoors from March to April when the soil has warmed up. Sow into a well prepared seedbed, with 2-3 seeds per station in drills 30cm (12") apart. When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings. The thinnings can be transplanted. Globe artichoke seed sown outdoors will usually flower the year after sowing.

Cover young globe artichoke plants with fleece when required to protect them from frosts. When growing globe artichokes, provide a thick mulch of organic matter around the base of the plants to help conserve moisture and reduce weed growth. Throughout summer, water globe artichokes regularly, particularly during dry periods. Harvest globe artichokes from July, before the scales open, while the buds are plump. Globe artichokes will produce good crops for several seasons but are best replaced after 3 years to maintain vigour and crop yields.
