Description

Better known as the fiddle leaf fig, Ficus lyrata boasts huge, glossy, flamboyantly fiddle-shaped leaves that will bring a calming tropical feel to any room. Growing up to 45cm (18in) long, each leaf features an attractive pattern of veining on the upper surface. What’s more, this RHS Award of Garden Merit winner is a fantastic air-purifying houseplant, with the huge leaves efficiently filtering out airborne toxins to keep your home or office fresh. Fiddle leaf fig will thrive in a bright spot out of direct sun, making a wonderful focal point for any room. Eventual height: 3m (10ft). Eventual spread: 1m (39in).

How to Grow
Although quite easy to grow, Ficus lyrata needs careful placement if it is to thrive. Fiddle-leaf Figs require plenty of light and tend to shed their leaves if insufficient light is provided. Position in a bright room, away from cold draughts and radiators, with a constant temperature of between 16C (60F) and 24C (75F). Ideally they should receive plenty of bright light, but avoid the direct glare of the sun.
More Info
Water regularly from spring to autumn, letting the surface of the compost to dry out between each watering, and allowing the pot to drain thoroughly. In winter, reduce watering but do not allow the compost to dry out completely. House plants should be fed regularly between March and September when they are in active growth. The foliage can be wiped with water and a soft sponge to remove any build-up of dust. The oldest leaves of Ficus lyrata will naturally die off as the plant grows. These should be carefully removed, to maintain a tidy appearance.
