Fennel may be grown as a herb for its attractive ferny foliage or as a vegetable for its swollen base and stem. With a delicate aniseed flavour the foliage of this hardy perennial makes a tasty addition to salads or as an attractive garnish. With a multitude of uses, fennel can even be used as a compress for softening rough chapped hands, or for treating numerous ailments. Although Fennel is a short-lived perennial, it is generally grown as an annual. Height: 180cm (71"). Spread: 45cm (18").

Pot up Fennel plants and grow them on in warm frost free conditions until plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting out in any fertile, well drained but reliably moist soil. Choose a position in full sun.
More Info When growing fennel, keep plants well watered, particularly during hot, dry periods. Fennel leaves can be harvested at any time. For fennel seeds, allow the flowers to fade and harvest once the seed heads have fully ripened. The tasty stems can be cut when they reach tennis ball size.
