The American Horsetail is taller, with thicker stems than its native cousin Equisetum hyemale. The new stems are pink when young, maturing to green with distinctive black bands that give it a fascinating prehistoric appearance. From June to August, the fertile stems are topped with brown flower spikes that provide more seasonal interest. Equisetum robustum is a tough, reliable evergreen that provides excellent year round interest. This hardy perennial is vigorous and best grown in an aquatic basket to restrict its spread. Height: 120cm (48"). Spread: 30cm (12"). Planting depth: Zones 1 & 2 to 15cm (6") below water level.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Equisetum is vigorous and best grown in an aquatic basket to restrict its spread. Grow Equisetum in boggy soil and the shallow margins of ponds with the crown planted to a depth of up to 15cm (6") below water level. Choose a position in sun or semi-shade.
More Info
Equisetum is easy to maintain. Leave the old stems in place to provide winter interest. In spring, as new growth reaches around 15cm (6") tall, the old growth can be cut back to just above water level.
