Eleocharis palustris is a deciduous marginal aquatic forming dense mats of grassy foliage. From June to August, this hardy perennial throws up a multitude of smooth stems, each terminating with a spiky brown and white flower head. Creeping Spike Rush is a pleasing British native, with an attractive appearance and offering valuable grassy cover for wildlife at the edge of ponds and streams. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 100cm (39"). Planting depth: Zones 1 & 2 up to a depth of 10cm (4") below water level.

How to Grow
Grow Eleocharis palustris in boggy soil and the shallow margins of ponds to a maximum depth of 10cm (4") of water above the crown of the plant. Choose a position in sun or semi-shade.

Eleocharis requires virtually no maintenance once established. Cut back the old foliage in autumn to just above the water surface, to maintain a neat and tidy appearance.
