Commonly known as the Indian strawberry. Attractive variegated-leaved plants produce yellow flowers followed by red edible fruits similar to alpine strawberries. Ideal in hanging pots, cascading over rockery or as a ground cover plant.
1 packet (40 duchesnea indica seeds) (26483)
Sow February to May. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays and cover with a very light sprinkling of vermiculite. Seal container inside a polythene bag and keep at a temperature of between 15-18ºC (60-65ºF). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 21-30 days.
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart.
