Description

Dicentra, or Lamprocapnos as they are now known, are a cottage garden favourite. Commonly called Bleeding Hearts for their dangling spring blooms, they make a fine addition to a damp, shaded spot where they will return year after year. The foliage forms a spreading clump of finely cut leaves that makes an elegant backdrop for its arching stems. Perfect for a damp woodland garden, or shaded cottage garden border. Height: 75cm (30"). Spread: 60cm (24").

Dicentra collection comprises:

  • Dicentra spectablis 'White Gold' – White blooms arch above chartreuse yellow leaves making a fabulous contrast with other spring perennials.
  • Dicentra spectabilis 'Gold Heart' - Golden leaved variety bearing racemes of pink, heart-shaped flowers.
  • Dicentra ‘Valentine’ - Scarlet, heart-shaped blooms drip from complimentary, arching red stems of this outstanding variety.

How to Grow
Pot up plug plants using free-draining compost, and grow them on in frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside. Once they are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting them outdoors. Grow dicentra plants in well drained, reliably moist, fertile ground in partial or dappled-shade. Dicentra prefers a humus-rich, neutral or alkaline soil. Improve soil conditions by adding plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting.
More Info
In spring, apply a mulch of chipped bark or well-rotted garden compost to the base of the plant to help retain moisture in the soil during the growing season. Dicentras have particularly fragile roots and are best left undisturbed if possible. However, overcrowded clumps may be divided in late autumn or early spring if necessary.
