Description
Compact, bushy mounds of bluish evergreen foliage erupt into a sea of mauve-blue flowers in late spring and are the closest yet to a true blue Dianthus. Ideal planted in borders, rockeries and containers, flowering over a long period each summer for many, many years.

Culinary note: Use the clove like tasting petals for adding to cakes, either for flavour or decorating, suitable for soups, salads and sauces too. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Sowing

Sow Dianthus seeds indoors from August to September or February to June on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag and keep at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 14 - 30 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow Dianthus plants on in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise pinks to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost. Plant Dianthus at a distance of 23cm (9") apart on any fertile, well drained soil in full sun.

More Info

Feed and water Dianthus plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded Dianthus flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced throughout the summer.
