Description
Here's where growing border perennials from seed pays off. This stunning evergreen perennial is rarely offered in plant form, but you can produce your own border full of Dianella tasmanica from just one packet of seed. Mounding, upright strappy foliage stays in place year round and is topped with striking miniature blue flowers followed by even more eyecatching berries into autumn. Best grown in container to allow for protection from frost over winter. Height: (1.2m (48in). Spread: 45cm (18in).

Sowing
Sow from February to July in good seed compost, just covering the seed with compost or Sow-lite (Vermiculite). Germination takes 30-90 days at 18-20C (65-70F). Sealing inside a polythene bag after sowing until they germinate is helpful. When large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings to boxes or 7.5cm (3 in) pots. When well grown gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out 30cm (12in) apart in moist, well drained soil in sun or part shade.
