A very rare plant indeed. This is one of the few plants with such intense blue flowers and that will also perform well in the garden. Flowering in its first year with 2.5cm (1in) gentian blue flowers, it then produces tubers and springs back to life the following year with an unceasing display of blooms. Wonderful in containers, rock gardens and the border (regardless of soil conditions). Hardy down to -8/-10C. Flowers summer. Height 15-30cm (6-12in.)

Sowing Months Flowering Months

On heavy soils or soils that lie wet in winter, lift the tubers and store like Dahlias.

Sow 1.5mm (1/16in) deep in good seed sowing compost from mid January to mid March. Germination can take 1-3 months at 16-18C (60-65F), after sowing seal the seed container inside a polythene bag to ensure that the compost stays moist but never saturated. After germination lower the temperature to 16C (60F).

When large enough to handle transplant the seedlings to 7.5cm (3in) pots. Later harden off and plant out when all risk of frost has passed 30cm (12in) apart in full sun. Prefers a moist, well drained soil. The seeds can also be sown in autumn in a greenhouse and over wintered. This makes better sized plants for planting out the next spring. The young seedlings usually die back as winter sets in and re-emerge in the early spring.

A nice blue flower....but vary sparse! 2015-07-19

Grown from seed this year, cultivated in three types of compost and conditions, yet all have grown the same with very few flowers. I won't bother to grow these next year.

Very pretty flowers 2014-07-27

Grown from seed this year and they have flowered really well. The shade of blue is lovely and just as the picture. They look best planted in groups at the front of the border and in the morning, mine are closed by the afternoon, but more in flower by the next day. Very nice.

Really pretty 2014-05-25

I grew these last year and they produced really pretty flowers in their first year. No sign of them coming back yet but hopefully something is going on underground. I would still grow them again anyway.

Amazing 2013-07-09

I purchased seed of this lovely plant a few years back. It has since come back every year. I think it makes tubers or similar. A real true blue flower. It grows very fast and appears in my front borders at around the start of august. It looks a picture amongst my dahlias, heliotrope and gaillardias.

Didn't disappoint 2013-06-07

Planted in autumn and now have lots of blue flowers. The electric blue of the flowers really stands out in the border and is very pretty in my full sun border. Now going to try the remaining plants in pots that i hvaen't transplanted yet to see if they perform as well in semi shade.
