Description

This super deciduous shrub bursts into life in the dead of winter, its bare woody stems dripping with fragrant, pendulous, sulphur- yellow blooms. On the darkest of winter days, Chimonanthus flowers can be seen in full bloom while most other plants lie dormant! An elegant winter flowering shrub for borders, or when grown against a house wall, where its exquisite perfume can be fully appreciated every time you step into the garden. The stems are also prized by flower arrangers - try cutting a few twigs to enjoy their exquisite fragrance in your home too. Your Wintersweet plant may take a few years to establish, but is well worth the wait. Height: 4m (12’) Spread: 3m (10’).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Chimonanthus plants in borders or against walls in any fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Although Wintersweet plants hardy, the young stems can be damaged by hard frosts, so choose a sheltered position to protect the plant. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Your plants may be slow-growing until they become established in their new position.
More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants become established. Prune Wintersweet shrubs in spring, immediately after flowering. Remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant. After pruning, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant.
