Fruit trees do not suffer weed competition well. Keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, while the ground is moist, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the tree, taking care not to mound it up against the stem. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.
Plant cherry trees in any well drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole and drive the stake into the ground to support the tree. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball. Plant fruit trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well.
When growing cherries on the patio, use a large 60cm (24") diameter container filled with a soil based compost such as John Innes No 3.

Just a note to let you know that the replacement Ilford Weeping Cherry is doing very well and is now in full bloom and looking very healthy and 'weeping' very pretty. Many thanks for your service and the advice from your helpful and pleasant gardening expert. Keep up the good work!

I was intrigued by this tree. A beginer in the gardening world, and liked the history behind this certain item. It arrived in a tall box and looked dead when I unwraped it, It had sustained a bit of damage during its journey so took away snapped and damaged branches. When I dug it into the ground I was still sceptical as whether I had been sent a stick by mistake but found that transporting the plants in this way protected them, 2 months on I have a full leaved weeping cherry and it loves the spot I had chosen. Cant wait for next spring to appreciate the flowers on there.
