Description How to Grow More Info Delivery Reviews

A perfect choice for small gardens, this slow-growing deciduous tree or large shrub bears heart-shaped, red-purple leaves, which age to vibrant shades of orange and red in autumn. If grown in a warm and sheltered spot, this variety will produce a smattering of delightful pink-purple, pea-like flowers in the spring, which are borne along the bare branches before the leaves. A magnificent specimen tree for small gardens, Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' can also be grown as a large shrub. This handsome RHS AGM variety is a real talking point and makes a lovely contrast to lime green foliage plants. Height and spread: 10m (30').

Culinary note: The flowers have a significantly higher vitamin content than most common fruits and vegetables, including oranges. The fresh buds have a not unpleasant sour bite and can also be pickled for later use with spring greens for example. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Flowering Months
In the first few years after planting, water Cercis trees regularly, particularly during dry periods, until fully established. Redbud trees will naturally form a handsome, often multi-stemmed tree. No pruning is required except to remove any damaged or poorly placed branches in late winter if necessary. Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' can also be grown as a large shrub, which encourages attractive, large leaves but sacrifices flowering. Once established, cut back all stems to 60-90cm (24-35") from the ground in late winter or early spring. This can be carried out every other year.
Grow Cercis canadensis in rich fertile, moist, well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun or dappled shade. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Plant Eastern Redbud trees at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery.

Disappointed 2016-09-07

Bought my 'Forest Pansy' in 2014 and while the upright stems have never produced any growth, the bottom of stems has loads of green leaves. It is now a small bush with bare stems emerging from its top. No flowers, just leaves, going nowhere, very disappointing.

No buds, no leaves 2016-07-04

I'm confused, the plant doesn't appear to be dead but there is no growth, any ideas? The stems and branches are bendy.

Pretty & compact 2015-05-25

This is the second year I've had this and though it hasn't flowered yet, the leaves are really pretty & it stands out against the green. It took a while to get going the first year, but I contacted customer services for advice and they were very helpful. It's a slow grower, which is great, & though I live in Scotland, I have a fairly sheltered, south facing garden, so am hoping for flowers....

T&M replied on 2015-05-26: Thank you for your review and for taking the time to share your wonderful comments. I hope we can continue to be of service.

Tiny signs of life! 2015-04-26

In light of previous two reviews i thought I should add my experience. I also had ordered last spring and the plant arrived in October. Considerably bigger than specified so was quite pleased. Planted immediately in large pot and kept in frost free conservatory through winter. I also had been eagerly watching for signs of life but nothing showed until just a few weeks ago. The very tiny buds have become more pronounced though still smaller than a match head and colour more distinctive and they now protude slightly rather than lie flat against stems. Waiting eagerly to see how they progress though with such tiny buds an sceptical I am going to get a good covering of foliage.

T&M replied on 2015-04-30: Thank you for your review. If you could possibly keep our Customer Care Team updated with the outcome of your Cercis on ccare@thompson-morgan.com, this would be most appreciated. One of our agents will be happy to investigate should it not perform as expected.

Nothing happening yet... 2015-04-18

My tree arrived promptly a month ago. It is sparser than the one pictured and more of a standard shape with a single stem. There's no sign of any buds forming yet, but I don't know when this should be happening? it would be useful if this product description included an indication of when it should start growing.

Time will tell! 2015-01-24

So far I have received the bare-root tree in the post no problem (said end of Feb and actually arrived early Jan). Planting it now. Looks unimpressive however my parents bought one last year which just resembled a twig and a couple of dead leaves, however it soon took hold and is now a very handsome and colourful shrub - hence my buying one! Fingers crossed....

T&M replied on 2015-01-26: Thank you for your review and for taking the time to share your comments. Trees and shrubs supplied in bareroot form will be dormant on despatch and can take several weeks to produce any top growth. Rest assured that this is perfectly normal as your tree will be focusing its energy on establishing a strong root system. I am confident that by the end of spring your tree will have come to life and be ready to bloom.

Not hopeful 2015-01-05

I was bought 2 trees as a birthday present, the cercis however has shown no signs of life so you kindly sent me another, however I have to say that this looks no better.... I know we had a cold spring but they have both been kept warm and sheltered and everything else in the garden is budding or in leaf/blossom so I am a bit worried
