This spreading shrub forms shapely low mounds of evergreen foliage that creates fabulous groundcover. In late spring, this Californian Lilac is smothered in masses of powder blue flowers that create a wonderful, soft hazy appearance. Awarded an RHS AGM for its garden performance, Ceanothus thyrsiflorus repens is ideal for planting on banks and at the front of sunny shrub borders, or adding useful evergreen structure throughout the garden. Height: 1m (3'). Spread: 2.5m (8').

How to Grow

Plant Californian Lilac into any fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a position in full sun with shelter from cold, drying winds. Ceanothus may be grown as a free standing specimen or trained against a wall or fence.

During spring each year, trim back the previous year’s flowered stems to within 2 or 3 buds of the woody framework.
