Flowering Months
Throughout the growing season, water Calochortus bulbs regularly and feed monthly. Reduce watering as the leaves begin to die back in autumn and remove dead foliage. Repot overcrowded containers of Calochortus plants in autumn before the new growth begins. Provide a warm dry environment in winter during their dormant period.
Plant Calochortus bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6") in containers of well drained loam based compost, such as John Innes No. 2. Fairy Lantern bulbs are frost hardy, tolerating temperatures to -5°C (23°F) but require a dry dormant period in winter. In all but the driest areas, they are best grown in a brightly lit, cool greenhouse or conservatory. Containers of Calochortus bulbs can be placed on the patio while in flower and brought back under cover as they become dormant. In borders outdoors, the bulbs will require a light sandy soil, full sun, and winter protection from cold, wet weather.
