Description

Brussels Sprout 'Bright' is a great 2-in-1 variety as both the sprouts and the cabbage-like top can be eaten as well. This is an autumn-maturing variety and produces delicious round sprouts that are well spaced and of uniform size. The cabbage-like top is sweet and can be eaten as fresh 'greens'. Brussels Sprout 'Bright' also shows good resistance to stem mildew, leaf spot and alternaria. Height: 75cm (30"). Spread: 50cm (20").

Companion planting: Try growing Brussels sprouts with Nasturtiums to draw cabbage white butterflies away from your crop, and mint to help deter flea beetles.

How to Grow

T&M's easy starter plants are delivered ready for planting at the correct time so that you can enjoy bigger, earlier and tastier vegetables. Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days prior to planting outdoors.

Grow Brussels Sprout plants outdoors in firm, rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Prepare the soil in advance in early spring by adding plenty of well rotted farmyard manure to the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Plant brassicas at a distance of 60cm (24") apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.

More Info
Water Brussels sprouts regularly and do not allow them to dry out as this may impair their development. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing and bring insect larvae to the surface. Remove any yellowed or diseased leaves as they occur. Brussels Sprouts can be harvested from October to December but their flavour will be improved if they are left exposed to the first frosts. Culinary note: Brussels sprouts are suitable for freezing.
