Description

Portulacaria afra is a shrubby African succulent which makes an excellent Bonsai for beginners! Unlike most Bonsai which need regular and careful watering, this tough little plant will cope perfectly well if you forget for a few days. The small, rounded fleshy leaves store water to keep it going during dry periods. Over time, it produces a woody stem, giving a fabulous tree-like appearance. This tough and reliable plant is ideal for a sunny windowsill. Height and spread: 30cm (12").

Please note: These trees have been carefully trained to create perfect miniatures of their full size siblings. Although many of the species used are perfectly hardy in the UK, these tiny trees are more susceptible to winter damage, given their size and the small volume of soil surrounding their roots. Therefore they are best protected from frost and cold winter weather by moving them to a cool, bright spot in the home or greenhouse.

How to Grow
Portulacaria Bonsai Trees are best grown in a bright, sunny position indoors. Avoid positions that are close to radiators and doorways where they will be affected by cold draughts. Generally, these trees will prefer a cool room such as a spare bedroom, home office or conservatory. In summer, they may be gradually acclimatised to outdoor conditions, and subsequently moved onto the patio if you prefer. Be sure to re-acclimatise them to indoor conditions again in early autumn, so that they can be kept frost free indoors during winter.
More Info
Portulacaria Bonsai trees have a small volume of compost at the roots – this can quickly dry out, so regular watering is needed to maintain reliably moist soil. However Portulacaria can tolerate drought far better than most other Bonsai species. Take care to drain plants well after each watering. Feed Bonsai regularly from March to September with a proprietary fertiliser. Bonsai trees should be repotted every two years or whenever necessary to prevent them becoming pot-bound. Regular pruning and training of Bonsai is an essential requirement to keep them small.
