Description
A recent selection of hardy, deciduous, Hyacinth Orchid that’s easier to grow than you might think! Bletilla striata 'Blue Dragon' thrives in cool, hummus-rich soils in the dappled shade of deciduous trees, making it perfect for a woodland garden or shaded rockery. Bletilla striata 'Blue Dragon’ produces exotic, mauve-blue flowers above clumps of linear, corrugated leaves in late spring and summer. How to Grow
Grow Bletilla in humus-rich, fertile soil in dappled shade. Although hardy, it will be most successful in a sheltered site, avoiding frost pockets and strong sunlight. Tubers require shallow planting of just 2cm below soil level. In particularly cold areas, grow it in a container which can be moved to a cool, frost free position over winter.
More Info
Feed and water regularly when plants are in active growth. In autumn, apply a dry mulch of leaf mould, bark chips or straw to protect the tubers from cold winter weather. Move containers of Hyacinth Orchids to a cold conservatory or unheated greenhouse, keeping the compost barely while plants remain dormant.
