Flowering Months

A familiar, trusted plant for cottage garden planting schemes and perennial borders. This reliable plant forms an evergreen clump of glossy green foliage that turns to beetroot red in winter. Bright pink spring flowers are carried in nodding clusters upon upright, red stems. The blooms add a splash of colour and provide a valuable source of nectar for pollinating insects. Bergenia purpurascens. This hard working plant is easy to grow and provides plenty of seasonal interest throughout the year. Height: 40cm (16"). Spread: 50cm (20").

How to Grow

Plant Elephant’s Ears in any well-drained soil in sun or dappled shade. Bergenia will cope with clay soils very well too.

After flowering, remove the faded flowerheads of Bergenia. Cut off any damaged foliage as it occurs too, to keep plants tidy. Lift and divide clumps in spring.
