Description

Astilbe japonica 'Montgomery' has deep, scarlet-red plumes from early summer, set against bronze-green foliage. These hardy perennials grow well in sun or shade, and are ideal for cottage garden borders or patio pots. If you're looking for a plant for a damp, shady corner that can cope with soil that may be waterlogged occasionally, then make Astilbe your choice. Astilbe plants are bushy and easy to maintain, and are rabbit resistant. Height: 70cm (28"). Spread: 45cm (18").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

2 x 1 litre potted astilbe plants (T58319P)
1 x 1 litre potted astilbe plant (58318)

How to Grow
Plant astilbes in sun or dappled shade. Astilbe plants require rich fertile soil that remains permanently moist, even in the height of summer. A boggy soil next to a pond or stream is ideal. On drier soils, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting and choose a shaded position.
More Info
Water regularly during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Divide over-crowded clumps of astilbe in spring when necessary, to increase their longevity. Apply a mulch around the base of the plant in spring to conserve moisture in the soil.
