A striking 'eat all' amaranth with multiple uses, though we think the striking pillarbox red pannicles against rich garnet foliage are best kept on show in the garden. This summer addition can be used as a vegetable or grain as well as an architectural companion to other summer bedding in the border and on the patio. Young leaves make a striking addition to salads while adding contrast to the green foliage in your summer displays. As the hanging pannicles develop, they take centre stage to add an otherworldly look to your summer displays. Height: 120cm (4ft) . Spread: 60cm (24in)

1 packet (1000 amaranthus seeds) (76488)

Sow seed from February to April in pots of moist seed compost. Do not cover the seed. Seal inside a polythene bag at a temperature of 20 to 25C (68 to 77F). During germination, allow the temperature to reduce at night. This will occur naturally if using a heated propagator is avoided. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Do not exclude light as this helps germination, which usually takes 3 to 15 days. Once germinated, remove from bag and grow seedlings on in cooler conditions. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3”) pots and grow on until plants are well-established. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost in a moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
More Info
