Description

If you're new to Alliums, this is a fantastic collection to get you started! These popular RHS AGM varieties produce spherical architectural flower heads in May and June perched on stiffly upright stems. As the flowers fade, attractive seed heads remain which become straw coloured as the season progresses, persisting throughout autumn. Dot 'Allium Lover's Collection' among herbaceous perennials, at the front of borders or in patio containers where they will attract bees and other pollinating insects. Supplied as bulbs.

  • Collection comprises:
  • Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation' – An RHS AGM Allium with spherical flower heads up to 8cm (3") across consisting of star-shaped deep violet flowers. Height: 90cm (35"). Spread: 15cm (6").
  • Allium cristophii – Also known as Star of Persia, this RHS AGM variety is mid-height with magnificent lilac-mauve flower heads up to 20cm (8") across. Height: 50cm (20"). Spread: 15cm (6").
  • Allium caeruleum – An RHS AGM variety with dainty, spherical blue flower heads. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 10cm (4").

How to Grow
Alliums thrive in light sandy, well drained soil in full sun. Avoid planting in cold wet soils as the bulbs are prone to rot in these conditions. Plant allium bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4") and a distance of 10cm (4") apart. A slow release fertilizer can be added to poor soils at the time of planting to improve fertility. When growing alliums, plant them where the leaves of other plants will cover the base of their stems. This will hide the old foliage which dies back before flowering begins.
More Info
Alliums require little maintenance. Leave stems of faded allium flowers intact to enjoy their spectacular seedheads in autumn. Divide overcrowded clumps of alliums after flowering. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
