These hard working perennials are tough and reliable, bringing texture and colour to sunny borders throughout the summer. The upright stems are cloaked in aromatic, ferny foliage and topped with flat plates of flowers that slowly fade through a range of colours as the blooms age. Commonly known as Yarrow, these easy going plants are perfect for cottage gardens, prairie-style plantings and wildlife areas where they attract attention from pollinating insects. They make great cut flowers too!

Achillea Collection comprises:

  • Achillea millefolium 'Salmon Beauty' (syn 'Lachsschönheit') - Flattened flower heads fade to vintage shades of peach and antique cream, giving an elegant multi-toned appearance. Height: 80cm (31"). Spread: 50cm (20").
  • Achillea ‘Strawberry Seduction’ – Dark strawberry red flowers are borne upon upright, uniform plants over a long flowering period. Height: 50cm (20"). Spread: 40cm (16").
  • Achillea ‘Terracotta’ - Ferny foliage is topped with flat, terracotta flower heads that gently mature to a biscuit-yellow colour. Height: 80cm (32"). Spread: 60cm (24").

How to Grow
Pot up achillea plants using free-draining compost, and grow them on in frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside. Once they are well grown, acclimatise yarrow plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting out on well drained soil in full sun. Achillea plants dislike wet ground, particularly during winter. Improve heavy soil conditions by adding coarse grit or sharp sand prior to planting.
More Info
Once established, Yarrow is reasonably drought tolerant and requires little maintenance. In summer, stake the tall flower stems with garden canes to prevent them drooping and leave faded flower heads intact at the end of summer to enjoy an attractive autumn seed head display. When the first frosts blacken the stems, cut them down to ground level. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of yarrow in spring. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.
