Description
  • Luxurious designer poppy
  • Sought after red blooms
  • A musts-have for perennial borders

This choice plant will need a patient gardener, but the rewards are well worth the wait! Over the course of 3 years, Meconopsis napaulensis forms a spreading clump of bristly basal foliage, which remains attractive and evergreen throughout the winter months. During this time it is flowerless, preparing for maturity when it will produce a single, spectacular display that will be talked about for years to come. When the time is right, the Satin Poppy sends up masses of branching stems filled with variable, cup-shaped blooms that range from pink through to cherry red. As summer ends, the fuzzy seed heads will set and this hardy monocarpic plant will die back; its life-cycle complete.

Meconopsis napaulensis thrives on damp, cool ground in shady corners where it can grow undisturbed. Be sure to save some seed to resow and begin your own fabulous colony. Height: 120cm (47"). Spread: 90cm (36").

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Meconopsis in a sheltered spot in semi or dappled shade - a cool, moist woodland situation is ideal, but the Himalayan poppy will also thrive in a moist, shaded border. Meconopsis prefers a rich, moist, neutral to acid, well drained soil that remains moist throughout summer, but does not sit wet in winter.
More Info
Meconopsis poppies particularly dislike dry soils and excessive heat. Water regularly during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. In spring, apply a mulch of chipped bark, leaf mould or other organic matter around the crown of the plant.

Thompson & Morgan strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3
