Be in with a chance of growing a record-breaking giant pumpkin with this seed taken from 'Matt's Monster'! Grown by Matt Oliver, horticulturalist at RHS Hyde Hall, Chelmsford, the heaviest outdoor-grown pumpkin in the UK weighed in at a massive 1,333.8lb - that's 95 stone or 605kg!
Matt grew his giant pumpkin with a seed that Thompson & Morgan famously purchased for a whopping £1,250 at auction. The seed came from the then heaviest pumpkin in the world, which weighed 2,323lb (166 stone) grown by Beni Meier from Switzerland in 2014. After the official weigh-in, and many photographs later, Matt decided to hollow out the giant pumpkin, turning it into a 'boat' and he then rowed it across the lake at RHS Hyde Hall!
Thompson & Morgan has designated April 14th 2017 Pumpkin Sowing Day. So order your 'Matt's Monster' pumpkin seed and sow them on or around this date for optimum results.
Did you know? The world's heaviest pumpkin which beat Mr Meier's 2014 record weighed 2,624.6 (1,190.49kg) when it was authenticated by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC) Germany on 9th October 2016. It was grown by Mathias Willemijns of Belgium.

Feed and water pumpkins regularly. When growing pumpkins, a thick mulch of organic matter spread around the plants will help to conserve moisture at the roots. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. Pumpkins will begin to produce long stems which can be trained in a circle around the plant to prevent them spreading too far.
Leave pumpkins on the plant for as long as possible until the skin has hardened and the fruits start to crack near to the stem. Harvest pumpkins before the first frosts by cutting each fruit from the stem leaving several inches of the stem attached.
