Direct sow Mangetout peas outdoors from March to early July, once the soil has warmed. Choose a weed-free position on moist, fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Sow Mangetout seed in flat bottomed drills at a distance of 5cm (2") apart, and 4cm (1½") deep. Allow a distance of 75cm (30") between rows. For successional crops, sow Mangetout peas every 10 days.
Support Mangetout plants with twiggy sticks, wire or netting as they grow, and use fine netting to protect pea crops from birds and pea moth damage. When growing Mangetout peas, regular and thorough watering especially when in flower will improve crop yields. Harvest edible podded peas around 12-13 weeks after sowing just as the peas inside start to form. Regular picking will encourage further cropping.

  1. Sowed this Kennedy twice this summer early and late it was very poor both times

    By Anne Love 08-10-2016

As it had good reviews I grew Kennedy this year and it was the worse mange tout I have ever grown, the pods rapidly went tough while they were still small. Thinking that the weather was too hot and dry in June and July I sowed a second crop which produced a crop in September, it was equally poor. Very disappointed.

  2. Tasty mangetout pea - highly recommended

    By Linda Bales 21-08-2011

Bargain seeds bought at half price and planted them in my raised bed. They germinated quickly and easily and the bees love the flowers. The pods are shiny, plump and green and grow so fast there are always some ready for picking. They are delicious steamed or used in stir fries and I am freezing some to enjoy through the winter. I will certainly grow these again next year.
