Maincrop


Maincrop potato varieties produce larger varieties for baking and roasting. For best results, 'chit' the tubers and then plant up from March to mid May. The potatoes will be ready to harvest approximately 20 weeks after planting. Maincrop potatoes are best grown in the ground, where they will have more space. 'Sarpo' potatoes offer exceptional resistance to blight, a common problem in potatoes.

Potato 'Sarpo Una'

Potato ‘Sarpo Una’ always performs well, producing high yields of pink skinned, oval, quite waxy tubers with good flavour, that are suitable for general culinary use. This early maincrop variety has excellent tuber blight resistance. Height and spread: 60cm (24").

Yellow skinned, long, oval, tubers with a deep golden flesh, a unique nutty flavour, and an extremely creamy, yet dry texture. This exclusive early maincrop Potato ‘Mayan Gold’ has proven exceptionally popular with chefs and the restaurant trade. Fantastic for chips and roast potatoes with a crispy texture and fluffy centres. Superb flavour when cooked in its skin, and for all cooking uses except boiling, as tubers tend to disintergrate. Potato 'Salad Blue'

Potato ‘Salad Blue’ is a vigorous maincrop variety that is more productive than ‘Congo’ with attractive blue/ purple flowers. Potato 'Highland Burgundy Red'

Potato 'Heritage Collection'

First early, second early, early maincrop, maincrop.

These five heritage varieties, all dating from before the 1950’s, have survived in enthusiasts’ collections over many years. T&M has previously sold these as microplants and minitubers, however we are delighted to be able to offer these now as regular seed potatoes. Height and spread: 60cm (24").


  • Collection comprises:
  • Potato ‘Highland Burgundy Red’ (maincrop) - Burgundy red flesh, with a fluffy texture and delicious sweet flavour. An excellent general purpose potato that retains its colour well if steamed rather than boiled.
  • Potato ‘Belle de Fontenay’ (early maincrop) - This pre-1950's first early variety, produces beautiful pale yellow tubers with a notably firm, waxy texture, making it an excellent salad potato.
  • Potato ‘Arran Pilot' (first early) - A traditional favourite with white flesh, a firm waxy texture and a pleasing flavour.
  • Potato 'Shetland Black' (second early) - Shallow eyed tubers with dark blue to almost black skin, and pale yellow floury flesh with a distinctive purple vascular ring.
  • Potato 'Salad Blue' (early maincrop) - Contrary to its name, the spectacular blue, floury flesh, of this unusual coloured potato is best suited to baking, roasting, mash, boiling or chips.
