How to grow garlic

Ideal For:
kitchen garden
Flowering Period:
May, June, July
full sun
    • 2 large garlic bulbs

    • Despatch:
    • £5.99
    • Out of stock
Plant garlic in rows in any well drained soil in full sun. It is important that the soil does not become waterlogged so incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve drainage and feed the soil. On particularly heavy soils, grow garlic in raised beds. Carefully split the bulb into individual cloves. Plant each clove at a depth of 2cm (1") below the surface of the soil and 10cm (4") apart, leaving 45cm (18") between each row.
Weed rows of garlic regularly and protect crops from birds by covering them with netting. Garlic is undemanding and will only require watering during particularly dry periods. Harvest garlic from June, when the leaves begin to turn yellow, by loosening them from the ground with a trowel. Gently wash and dry garlic bulbs, then place them in a warm dry position to dry out, prior to storing them. Bulbs can then be stored in good condition for up to 3 months.

  1. Excellent

    By Geoffrey Lee 24-06-2016

I planted 5 cloves in Autumn of 2014,and harvested them late last June.To my great surprise and delight,I discovered 5 large bulbs of cloves, each one filled my palm.Once dried they were hung up in the outhouse, and the last cloves were used up this late April. So,I am very well pleased with them.I shall most definitely buy more for this Autumn.

  2. Poor

    By Robert Webster 13-07-2014

July 2014. Maybe it was something I did but these produced such poor bulbs they were unusable. Previously other varieties have been fine plus I crop rotate but these went straight into the composter.
