Herbs are very easy to grow and are essential ingredients for all types of cooking, as well as injecting life into a salad. Grow them on your windowsill or create a herb garden just outside your kitchen door, so that you can easily pick a few leaves to add to your meals.
ChivesAllium schoenoprasum This perennial member of the onion family is undemanding and easy to grow, returning year after year, and attracting bees and butterflies to its pretty pink blooms. Chives are an essential addition to the herb garden. Their leaves and edible flowers make them indispensible for garnishing potato salad, soups and other savoury dishes. Chives are ideal for edging paths and borders and also make an excellent companion plant, deterring pests such as carrot root fly. Height: 40cm (16”). Basil 'Siam Queen'Ocimum x citriodorum A particularly fragrant selection and a distinct improvement over other Thai Basils. Basil ‘Siam Queen’ has an extra large leaf with an intense liquorice fragrance. The bright green basil leaves make an attractive foil for its purple-red stems which bear violet-pink flowers. Summer SavorySatureja hortensis With slender bronze green leaves and lilac tubular flowers, this hardy annual makes an attractive addition to the herb garden. Summer Savory lends an aromatic peppery tang to soups and seafoods. It’s mild flavour is useful as an alternative to sage or thyme, and it is also used to aid digestion, reduce fevers and soothe bee stings. Grown next to Broad Beans it is reputed to help repel black fly. Gather Summer Savory when harvesting your broad beans and them cook together - it does wonders for the flavour.
