Jerusalem Artichoke 'Gerard'

Helianthus tuberosus, Sunchoke

Hardy Tuber

Jerusalem Artichoke 'Gerard' makes an eye-catching variety with its white flesh and colourful red skin. As a result, this French cultivar has created a lot of interest in the restaurants and specialist food outlets. Although, perhaps slightly lower yielding than the popular variety 'Fuseau', its smoky flavour is considered by many to be superior. This low maintenance crop will grow almost anywhere and the tall stems make a useful windbreak too. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 90cm (36").

Ideal For:
kitchen garden
Flowering Period:
August, September
Position:
full sun
    • 10 tubers

    •
    • Despatch: By end of May 2014
    • £9.99
Plant Jerusalem artichoke tubers in any well drained garden soil in full sun or semi shade. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6"), and 30cm (12") apart with the main buds facing upwards. Leave a distance of 90cm (3') between rows. Particularly large tubers may be cut into 5cm (2") pieces provided that each portion has several buds.

Growing Jerusalem artichokes is easy and they require little aftercare. When plants reach a height of 30cm (12") mound earth halfway up their stems, to improve their stability as they grow. Water Jerusalem artichokes during particularly dry periods and feed very occasionally.

By late summer Jerusalem artichoke plants will have reached up to 3m (10') tall and should be cut back to 1.5m (5') to remove any flower heads and prevent them toppling over. Cut back the stems to just above ground level when the foliage begins to yellow and die back. Jerusalem artichokes can be harvested as and when required from October to February and will store underground for several months.
