Brassica rapa var. rapa. Flatter, globe-shaped roots with purple crowns and white bases, ideal as baby turnips when the taste is sweet and succulent. Dark green, erect leaves are ideal steamed as 'greens'. Turnip Atlantic is ideal for growing in containers.
Sow seeds from March to August. Sow seeds thinly direct outside or in containers, 13mm (½in) deep. Sow regularly for fresh roots throughout spring, summer and autumn.
Thin as necessary for small, succulently sweet roots.
Keep well watered during dry weather.
Turnips combine the health benefits of broccoli and cabbage with the sweetness of a root vegetable. They are also a good source of fibre.
Harvested whilst young, baby turnips used raw make a sweet addition to a salad, or use as a steamed vegetable.
