Sow seeds mid March to late April, thinly in a prepared seedbed 13mm deep in drills 30cm apart.
Transplant when plants large enough by making holes about 23cm apart and 20cm deep using a dibber or trowel. Drop a plant in each hole and water in. Allow 45cm between rows.
Mound up soil around the stems as the plants grow.
Leeks are high in folic acid, potassium, and Vitamins A and C. They contain sulphur-rich compounds which have been shown to thin the blood, reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Combine with potato for a thick and hearty soup.
