A South African evergreen shrub, unique in the fact that it makes an easy houseplant, tolerating the cool, shady conditions often found in many older homes. Large 20cm (8in) leaves are accompanied by cup-shaped white blooms from spring to summer.
Sow seeds March to April on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 21-30 days.
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3 inch)pots or trays. When well grown, pot on into 20cm (8 inch)pots, then into large containers as required. Grow in soil-based potting mix and in full light, although will tolerate some shade and slight drafts when grown as a houseplant.
Water freely and feed with liquid fertiliser monthly during growing, water sparingly in winter. Trim back plants as required when they become larger. Can also be grown outdoors in a sheltered position, if kept dry and frost-free overwinter.
