Pretty, phlox-like 13mm (½in) white and maroon flowers that open in the late evening, releasing a delicious scent. Grow in groups to take advantage of the honey fragrance.
Sow in a good seed compost 1.5mm (1/16in) deep in early spring. Germination takes 7-14 days at 15-18C (60-65F). Alternatively sow outdoors where they are to flower in late spring in drills 3mm (1/8in) deep and thin the seedlings out to 15cm (6in).
Transplant the seedlings when large enough to handle into boxes or singly into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Grow at around 10-13C (50-55F). Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out in spring after all risk of frost has gone, 15cm (6in) apart.
They prefer an open sunny position and will grow well on most soils. Pot a few seedlings to make charming summer flowering pot plants too.
