Carmine, light rose and white flowers with beautiful silver-marbled deep green foliage. Flowers often appear before the foliage. Evergreen very hardy, and will self seed.
Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 12 hours before sowing from autumn to spring in a good seed compost. Sow 3mm (1/8in) deep and gently firm down compost. Keep soil damp but not wet. Sealing in a polythene bag after sowing is helpful. Keep in darkness until first seedlings show. Germination usually takes 1-6 months at no higher than 15C (60F).
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots and grow cool and well lit. Keep the compost moist but not overwet, shade from strong sun and plant out in late summer/early autumn 15cm (6m) apart in well drained soil and part shade.
