Sow from February to July in a good seed compost just covering the seed with compost or Sow-Lite (vermiculite). Germination takes 30 days at 20C (70F).
When large enough to handle, transplant to 7.5cm (3in) pots. When well grown gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out 30-45cm (12-18in) apart in ordinary garden soil with their roots in the shade and the rest of the plant in the sun.
Prune back to 30cm (12in) of ground level in first February and to within 75cm (30in) of the soil level in subsequent years. For baskets and containers, plant one per 30cm (12in) container, using John Innes Potting Compost No3., and keep well watered.
