Sow mid winter/early spring or autumn 1.5mm (1/16in) deep in a good free draining compost. Seal in a polythene bag or cover with a piece of glass. Germination usually takes 3-21 days at a soil temperature of 21-24C (70-75F). Low and fluctuating soil temperatures may cause the seed to take much longer to germinate.
Transplant when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots, move to 8-10cm (3-4in) pots 5-6 weeks after sowing and liquid feed regularly commencing 3-4 weeks after final potting Provide a temperature of 7C (45F) through the winter for autumn sown plants. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost 30cm (12in) apart in a sunny spot.
