A quite rare and choice plant suitable for a well drained sunny or semi-shaded site in border, rockery or wall. When planted among shrubs will happily scramble through them. Palest blue, nodding, bell shaped 4cm (1½in) blooms, which reveal sumptuous orange and maroon centres when tilled. Flowers summer. Height 60-90cm (2-3ft).
Sow from spring to mid summer on the surface of a good free draining, soilless compost. Do not exclude light which is beneficial to germination. Keep the soil moist but not wet until germination which takes 7-40 days at 20C (70F).
Transplant the seedlings carefully when large enough to handle, into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Later move to a cold frame and plant out in autumn or spring 30cm (12in) apart into slightly acid, deeply dug, sandy soil in sun or part shade.
Once established they are best not disturbed.
