Cosmos sulphureus 'Brightness Mixed'

Half-hardy Annual

 Customer Rating

Possibly the most free-flowering cosmos of this type. Dwarf and bushy plants are covered with flowers in a delightful mixture of gold, lemon, orange and red from early summer through to the autumn frosts. Spectacular when planted towards the front of annual borders or in containers.

Ideal For:
patio, wildlife gardens, cut flower garden
Flowering Period:
July, August, September, October
Sowing Months:
March, April, May
Position:
full sun
    • 1 packet (100 seeds)

    •
    • Despatch: By end of April 2014
    • £2.49

Sow Cosmos seed from March to May at a depth of 3mm (⅛") in a good quality seed compost, and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-25C (64-77F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the soil damp but not wet. Do not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 7-15 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7cm (3") potsand grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When Cosmos plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in full sun in any moist, well drained soil at a distance of 45cm (18") apart. Pinch out the growing tip of each stem when transplanting to encourage stems to branch and produce more Cosmos flowers.

When growing Cosmos plants, water regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded Cosmos flowers regularly to encourage more blooms to be produced throughout the summer.

Small plants that fit in well in between other plants in garden & containers. Small, bright colours flowering late summer and into autumn. Don't think I made the most of them this year, as they certainly like full sun, but I will grow them again as they were very easy to germinate

Lovely plants - the ones that survived that is - they looked very healthy young plants grown lovingly by me from seed but when I planted them out in my pots most of them were eaten by slugs and snails. I do try to be environmentally kind in my garden but next year I am going to be ruthless with the slug pellets. I will try again next year.

I was surprised at how small these plants turned out to be, having always grown C. bipinnatus before. They grew easily from seed but seemed to take ages to establish once potted on. However, once blooming had started they redeemed themselves and have flowered their little socks off! The best thing about them is that they are irresistible to bees - continually smothered in them. I'll certainly be growing them again.
